Lectures

Mikhail Gostev – Physics. Overview of our scientific knowledge of the world.

19th September, 26th September, 3rd October.
Starting time: 12:00.
Duration: 45 minutes.
Classroom: G3.
Cost: £3 per lecture (or £6 for all three)

    Big and small worlds:

  • our Universe – what it is made of, and the Earth’s place in it;
  • microworld; the structure of matter, and building bricks of quantum physics.
    Physics behind modern technologies:

  • how electronics works;
  • how signals are transmitted with radio waves and optic fibres;
  • how phone displays work – and lots of other objects that surround us in everyday life.
    Physics around us:

  • where metal comes from;
  • how bricks are made;
  • how petrol is produced;
  • and many other extraordinary stories about ordinary things!

Some of these topics are studied at school. However, these overview lectures, given in Russian by an expert physicist, an alumnus of the legendary “PhysTech”, will allow the listeners to see all the facts together, as parts of one big picture of the world.

Aleksey Sadekov – Geology

24th October
Starting time: 12:00.
Duration: 45 minutes.
Classroom: G3.
Cost: £3 per lecture

Rapid climate change: myth or reality?

Sergey Nayakshin – Astronomy.

10th October, 14th November, 21st November.
Starting time: 12:00.
Duration: 45 minutes.
Classroom: G3.
Cost: £3 per lecture (or £6 for all three)

Planets of “foreign” stars.
Observing planets of other stars – what works best: telescopes on Earth or satellites in orbit? Properties of the planets discovered so far. Might “little green men” live there?

Birth and death of the Solar System.
Surprising as it may sound, we still don’t understand with complete clarity how the Earth, the Moon, and all those asteroids and comets were formed. (“Wonders of the Solar System” is not the whole story!) Sadly, we do know that, with time, life on our planet will become totally impossible. We shall discuss where one could escape to, when it becomes unbearably hot…

Our supermassive black hole.
Emergence of black holes: a fact not a myth. Properties of black holes – would it be a good idea to fly through a black hole? Should we be scared of black holes on Earth? Observations of a supermassive black hole in the centre of our Galaxy, and how this black hole stopped the growth of our Galaxy in its youth.

You are most welcome to join this Professor of Astronomy from Leicester University on this exciting journey, in Russian, around our Universe.
