Creative Translation Course (ages 9–12), 2:15–3:00 pm
Starting when the group is formed.
This course is designed for children who have a good enough command of Russian to understand literary texts in Russian, appreciate their meaning and nuances, and choose appropriate words and expressions in English. During the lessons, students will translate fairy tales, short stories and extracts from contemporary children’s literature, work with dialogues, try their hand at oral and simultaneous interpreting, and compare different translations to learn how to find the version that best conveys the meaning, mood and character of the original text when translating from Russian into English.
Each lesson will include a short vocabulary warm-up, a variety of translation exercises and discussions of interesting language choices. For those who enjoy creative challenges, we will also try translating poetry while preserving its rhythm and rhyme. The course will help students expand their vocabulary, develop a feel for both languages, and become more confident switching between Russian and English.
The course is taught by Masha Carter, an English and Creative Writing teacher and a student at Pembroke College, University of Cambridge.
English and Russian are her native languages, and her academic specialisation is connected with languages, translation, literature and history.
